Life and Failure

“When you grow up, you tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life it’s just to live your life inside the world trying not to bash into the walls too much…Try to have a nice family life, have fun, save a little money…That’s a very limited life! Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact and that it is, everything around you that you call life was made up by people that WERE NOT SMARTER than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you will never be the same again!” – Steve Jobs

Let me share with you one of the most shocking personal experiences that I have ever had to let you know how I got rid off the word “Failure” in my vocabulary. The fear of failure doesn’t exist in my mind anymore. In March of 2009 my wife and I were blessed with the birth of our beautiful son, Tayde.  He was diagnosed at birth with a congenital heart defect.   Unfortunately he was rushed to Rady’s Children’s Hospital in San Diego and had his first heart procedure on his first day of life.  Our little baby spent over three weeks at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Rady Children’s Hospital.  The NICU treats the most critically ill newborns, many of whom suffer from severe heart and lung conditions or are born extremely premature.

Our faith in God, our baby’s intense desire to live,  and the highly qualified staff of Cardiologists and nurses who took care of our baby kept us positive about his recovery. The recent advancements in technology are truly incredible and have allowed for complicated procedures to be far less invasive to tiny babies.  The time that we spent at the hospital by his side was very difficult for us. Our baby’s condition was so unstable in the beginning that we were living our days one hour at a time. There was no “tomorrow” at that time.   As a parent the feeling of watching your child battle for his life and not being able to do anything to help is excruciatingly painful. We felt this not just for our own baby’s condition but also, for all the other babies around us battling for their lives.

After numerous studies, x-rays, two heart procedures, echo-cardiograms and dozens of visits to the hospital, our son is in his path to recovery. He is about to turn 4 years now.  While he is still being monitored, our son has made a truly miraculous recovery. He is a very happy and fun loving son.   I feel honored and blessed to be his Dad.

When you experience something like that in life, things never look the same ever again. The decision making process becomes a little “simpler” to some extend and the fear of failure is not present anymore. Anything is possible in life when your body, mind and soul are in balance. In the following video, Steve Job shares some valuable insights about life and failure:

Sir Winston Churchill once said: “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.” If you are in the process of trying to make big changes in your life, changes that will help to make your life better, GO FOR THEM!

Trust your instincts and ACT on them! Don’t be afraid to fail, crash and burn.

If you are afraid of failing you won’t get too far.
